A Modern Kitchen in an Old Micanopy House

Kitchen Remodeling in Micanopy is a different job from remodeling a newer suburban home. Micanopy is described as the oldest continuously inhabited community in the interior of Florida, and its downtown Micanopy Historic District has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. Many homeowners here want a kitchen remodel that works like a new kitchen but feels like it belongs in the house.

How we approach an older home

Old houses hold surprises. Before we design anything, we look at the subfloor, framing, wiring and plumbing that serve the kitchen. We want to know whether the floor slopes, whether walls are plumb and whether the electrical service can handle modern appliances. That inspection shapes the design and the quote, so you are not hit with a change order halfway through.

Matching the character of the house

  • Cabinet styles: Inset or Shaker-style doors, painted finishes and simple hardware often suit older homes better than slab doors.
  • Countertops: Soapstone-look quartz, honed granite or butcher block can feel at home in a period kitchen.
  • Backsplash: Subway tile, handmade-look tile or beadboard fit many older interiors.
  • Flooring: Where original wood floors exist, we discuss whether to restore, match or replace them.
  • Lighting: Fixtures with a period look paired with modern LED under-cabinet lights.

A town with deep roots

The site was recorded as a Timucua village by Hernando de Soto's expedition in 1539. After Florida passed to the United States, it was settled as Wanton's in 1823, renamed Micanopy in 1834 and incorporated in 1837, then reincorporated in 1858. Two forts stood here during the Second Seminole War. The town's historic look is well known enough that the film Doc Hollywood, starring Michael J. Fox, was shot here.

Exterior changes need extra thought

Interior kitchen work is usually straightforward in terms of approvals, but changes visible from the street, such as a new window over the sink, a moved door or an addition, deserve a check with the town before we commit to a plan. Ask us early and we will build that step into the schedule.

A small town with few homes

Micanopy had 648 residents in the 2020 census, up from 600 in 2010. With so few houses in town, each one tends to be distinctive, and we treat every kitchen here as a custom project rather than a standard package.

Micanopy Questions

Can I get a modern kitchen in a historic Micanopy home without losing its character?

Yes. Modern appliances, good lighting and efficient storage fit fine in an older house when the cabinet style, counters, backsplash and fixtures are chosen to suit the period. We bring samples and talk through options that fit your home.

Is my house in the Micanopy Historic District?

The district covers downtown Micanopy and was listed on the National Register in 1983. If you are unsure whether your home is inside it, check with the town. Interior kitchen work is generally simpler than exterior changes.

What problems do you find when remodeling an older kitchen?

Sloping floors, walls that are out of plumb, older wiring that cannot handle modern appliances and plumbing from several eras are the most common. We inspect early so these are in the plan and price from the start.

Do you come all the way to Micanopy from Gainesville?

Yes. Micanopy is just south of Gainesville and part of our regular service area. The estimate visit is free.
